In the vast expanse of the South China Sea and Pacific Ocean, the Indian Navy’s frontline stealth frigate, INS Shivalik, embarked on a significant mission, departing from the bustling port of Singapore on the 30th of May, 2024. The ship’s journey to Yokosuka, Japan, marks a pivotal moment in India’s maritime engagement under the Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) initiative.
During its operational turnaround (OTR) in Singapore, INS Shivalik’s crew engaged in a series of diplomatic and commemorative activities. A formal call with the Base Commander at Changi Naval Base underscored the mutual respect and cooperation between the two nations. The solemn Wreath Laying at Kranji War Memorial paid homage to the brave souls who laid down their lives for peace and freedom.
The High Commissioner of India to Singapore welcomed the crew, reinforcing the strong ties between the two countries. The visit to the Information Fusion Centre (IFC) highlighted the shared commitment to maritime security and the free flow of trade and navigation.
In a heartwarming gesture, approximately 80 school children were invited onboard, igniting young minds with dreams of the sea and service. The presence of the Indian and Australian High Commissioners onboard further cemented the collaborative spirit among the Indo-Pacific nations.
Cross-deck visits to USS Mobile (LCS) reflected the deep maritime relations and shared values between the navies, fostering a sense of camaraderie and partnership.
As INS Shivalik waved farewell to Singapore, it set its course towards strategic engagements, including the Japan-India Maritime Exercise (JIMEX 24) and the Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC 24). These exercises are not just a display of naval prowess but a concerted effort to enhance interoperability with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), the US Navy, and other partner navies participating in RIMPAC 24.
This deployment is more than a routine mission; it’s a testament to India’s commitment to fostering security and growth for all in the region. As INS Shivalik sails through the blue waters, it carries with it the hopes of a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
