In a major boost to India’s defense aviation sector, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has successfully obtained intellectual property rights (IPR) for the indigenous engine of the Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) program. This achievement is the result of a collaborative effort with Safran Helicopter Engines, a renowned French manufacturer of helicopter engines.
The partnership between HAL and Safran represents a significant milestone in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defense technologies. The collaboration will facilitate local production of the IMRH engine, granting India the IPR for the technology. This crucial aspect allows India to further develop and manufacture the engine and its variants independently.
The new engine, designed for super-medium and heavy helicopters, is similar to Safran’s Aneto family of engines, which generate between 2,500 and 3,000 shaft horsepower (shp). HAL’s involvement extends beyond manufacturing, as the agreement ensures HAL’s active participation in the core engine development program. This enables HAL to contribute valuable expertise and gain experience in advanced engine technologies.
The benefits of this joint venture are numerous. Local production of the IMRH engine will enhance India’s defense capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. Additionally, IPR ownership paves the way for future advancements in domestic engine development, potentially leading to applications beyond the IMRH program.
The workshare agreement between HAL and Safran outlines the sharing of activities within the joint venture, with both parties agreeing on an equitable distribution. HAL will take part in the design, development, and production of some of the core engine components, which is a significant achievement in terms of expertise and know-how in the country.
The development of the IMRH helicopter continues, with a 1/3 scale model displayed by HAL at Aero India 2023. Discussions are also ongoing with the Indian Armed Forces regarding the operational requirements for this new helicopter. The availability of an indigenous engine will enhance the self-reliance content on the platform and demonstrates the commitment of both Safran Helicopter Engines and HAL to the Indian Government’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India).
