India’s defense landscape saw a significant enhancement with the induction of the Akash missile system. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), the Akash is a shining example of India’s self-reliance in defense technology.
The Genesis of Akash
The Akash missile system, meaning ‘Sky’ in Sanskrit, is a medium-range mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system. It’s designed to defend against a multitude of aerial threats, from fighter jets to cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles. The system is fully mobile, capable of protecting a moving convoy and providing air defense coverage for an area of 2,000 km².
Technical Prowess
The Akash system can target aircraft up to 45 km away, neutralizing aerial targets with precision. It comprises a single Rajendra 3D passive electronically scanned array radar and four launchers with three missiles each, all interlinked. Each battery can track up to 64 targets and engage up to 12 simultaneously.
Strategic Significance
In service with both the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force, the Akash missile system is India’s answer to modern air warfare. It’s not just a defensive asset but also a strategic tool that enhances India’s military autonomy and readiness.
Global Recognition
The Akash missile system has garnered interest from several nations, positioning India as a significant player in the global defense market. It’s a testament to the country’s growing prowess in indigenous defense technologies.
